Do you all remember the show SpongeBob Squarepants. If you do, welcome my fellow millennials and Gen Z’s! Let’s talk about it.
Let’s talk about something we’ve all grown up with: SpongeBob SquarePants. He was the happiest part of our childhood. Always smiling and always ready to take on the day; the OG passenger princess, but not by choice. However, we’re not here to talk about Mr. Squarepants, today we’re diving deep into the trials and tribulations of Squidward Tentacles.
Now, if you’re anything like me, you probably grew up thinking that Squidward was the biggest HATER. SpongeBob and Patrick were just trying to live their best lives; playing outside, enjoying the seasons, jellyfishing, expressing their active imaginations in nothing but an empty box. Then there was Squidward… just mad, who we thought at the time just hated happiness.
But as I grew into adulthood I’ve come to realize that Squidward was onto something. Here’s how we’ve come to understand his life:

- Embracing Introversion: Squidward was the OG introvert. He wanted nothing but a good book, a comfy chair, and a nice warm fire. Sound familiar? Because me? Iv’e embraced the art of enjoying my own company, loving my own space and the sweet peace of indoors.
- Work-Life Balance: Okay, so maybe Squidward didn’t have the best work-life balance working 24/7 . So it makes sense that he would value the only time he had to himself. Now grown, seeing how hustle culture has engulfed our way of life, finding time for self-care is SUPER important. Squidward had the right idea.
- Dealing with Annoying Neighbors: Let’s be real— Can you imagine (unless you have kids) coming home from a long, hectic day of work; dealing with annoying customers, coworkers, your boss all day; and your neighbors are yelling and screaming outside your window, knocking on your door from boredom, or shaking the ground partying with the jellyfish??? I would be yelling too! Squid was TIRED.
So, if you really think about it, adulting is realizing that sometimes embracing the Squidward lifestyle is necessary.
Felt this on every single level. Squidward was misunderstood!! Justice for SQUIDWARD.
